5 Ways to Uncover Your Brand Voice
If you’re starting a business, you know there’s a lot of writing involved in getting the word out about your venture. Social media posts, website copy, ads, blogs…it can be a lot. The good news is, it can be a lot less stressful if you first establish what your brand looks, feels, and sounds like.
In other words, identify your brand voice.
If you’re not a writer, or you’re a writer who’s prone to overthinking *raises hand slowly*, use these 5 prompts to get you into the right headspace:
Scroll through a text thread with someone who knows you well. Notice what words you tend to use often, and what you sound like when you’re comfortable. Be inspired by everyday you.
Research other folks in your field. Take note of what about their approach speaks to you, what feels off-putting, and what’s fine for them but just isn’t your jam.
Think about where you’re from. The places and people who’ve influenced you are an important part of your story. How have they made you who you are? How have they shaped your desire to start a business or inspired the way you want to run your business?
Challenge yourself to pick 5 words to describe your brand. Get specific. Nice is too broad. Midwest-friendly is specific.
Get visual. Collect images that feel like you, images that tell a story and have emotional resonance. Then write down words that describe your collage.
I should note that not every brand’s voice is identical or even similar to its founder’s voice. That’s another post for another day. But if you are central to your brand, these prompts should serve you well.
Best of luck, brand warriors. Let me know how it goes and share any insights you discover along the way.
